About The Song
“Get You in the Mood” is the non-album B-side to the Eagles’ debut single “Take It Easy,” released on May 1, 1972, by Asylum Records under catalog number AS-11005. The A-side “Take It Easy” reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on July 22, 1972, and earned Gold certification from the RIAA. Written solely by Glenn Frey, the track runs 3:52 in its original mix and was never included on the band’s self-titled debut studio album *Eagles*, which arrived in June 1972. It remained unavailable on any Eagles studio album for over 46 years until its official CD debut on the comprehensive *Legacy* box set.
Recorded during the early 1972 sessions for the debut album produced and engineered by Glyn Johns, the song was initially slated for inclusion on the LP. After Glyn Johns was dissatisfied with the original recording of “Nightingale,” the band recut that track at Wally Heider Recording Studio in Los Angeles. This change allowed Don Henley a second lead vocal on the finished album, resulting in “Get You in the Mood” being dropped from the track listing and reassigned exclusively as the B-side. It is one of only two Eagles B-sides (along with the later “Funky New Year”) that never appeared on a studio album. The single was pressed on 7-inch vinyl and marked the only instance in the band’s catalog where a non-LP track served as the flipside to a commercial single.
The song finally received a formal commercial release on the *Legacy* 12-CD (and multi-LP) career-spanning box set issued by Rhino/Elektra on November 2, 2018. Positioned as track two on the dedicated Singles and B-Sides disc, it appears in a newly remastered version by Bernie Grundman. The *Legacy* set also includes all seven Eagles studio albums, three live albums, and additional single edits, making “Get You in the Mood” available to collectors for the first time on CD. The box set entered the Billboard 200 and was accompanied by vinyl and digital reissues of the same remastered material.
Personnel on the recording includes Glenn Frey on lead vocals, electric guitar, and backing vocals; Bernie Leadon on electric guitar and backing vocals; Randy Meisner on bass guitar and backing vocals; and Don Henley on drums and backing vocals. Glyn Johns served as both producer and engineer. The track is a blues-influenced mid-tempo rocker with a straightforward arrangement that highlights Frey’s lead vocal and the band’s early country-rock edge. It has been remastered twice for official release: first in 2008 for digital distribution and again in 2018 for *Legacy*. No alternate mixes, extended versions, or official live recordings of the track have ever been issued. The song did not receive its own single release or chart placement beyond its role as a B-side. Lyric
Oh, I sure wish I could get you in the mood
To get your self as crazy as me
But we both know I can’t even touch you, babe
And still your love is gettin’ to meI get so wasted in the city
Last girl I hit on wasn’t very pretty
I’ve been wastin’ all my time in pity
Waitin’ for you to leave your manI need you, baby
You drive me crazy
The past and the present
Are endless and hazy
The moon is a weeper
The sun is your clown
And his way of lovin’
Is holdin’ you downI’m gonna sit right down and wait for my angel
I touch her when I’m holding your hand
She’s got eyes wide as you
Bright, shinin’ too
Sleepin’ next to some other manBut I could make you feel so good
If I could only make you mine
If you could believe that you could live without him
I got to tell you one more timeI need you, baby
You drive me crazy
The past and the present
Are endless and hazy
The moon is a weeper
The sun is your clown
And his way of lovin’
Is holdin’ you down
