About The Song
“Overnight Male” is a playful country track recorded by George Strait for the soundtrack of his 1992 film Pure Country. The album, titled Pure Country, was released on September 15, 1992, by MCA Records and served as Strait’s thirteenth studio album. The song was written by Richard Fagan, Kim Williams, and Ron Harbin, and produced by Tony Brown and George Strait himself.
Recording sessions for the Pure Country soundtrack took place across several studios in Nashville, Tennessee (Sound Stage Studios, Emerald Studios, Masterfonics, and Sixteenth Avenue Sound), as well as in California (Warner Bros. Recording Studios in Burbank, Ocean Way Recording, and Conway Studios in Hollywood). The track features background vocals by Andrea Zonn and additional contributions from George Strait’s son, George “Bubba” Strait Jr.
Interestingly, “Overnight Male” was not originally written for George Strait. It was first recorded by country artist B.B. Watson for his 1991 debut album Light at the End of the Tunnel, released on Oaktree Records. Strait’s version gained significantly more exposure due to its inclusion on the massively successful Pure Country soundtrack. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and peaked at No. 6 on the Billboard 200, eventually earning 6× Platinum certification from the RIAA for shipments exceeding six million copies in the United States.
Although never officially released as a single, “Overnight Male” received considerable unsolicited radio airplay following the album’s release. This airplay allowed it to chart briefly, reaching No. 72 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 1992. The Pure Country soundtrack spawned four official singles: “I Cross My Heart” (No. 1), “Heartland” (No. 1), “When Did You Stop Loving Me” (No. 6), and “Where the Sidewalk Ends” (did not chart as a single but was promoted).
The song’s lighthearted lyrics play on the double meaning of “male/mail,” with the narrator offering to be an “overnight male” who reliably delivers love. Songwriters Richard Fagan and Kim Williams were established Nashville hitmakers; Fagan later co-wrote the 1995 No. 1 hit “Sold (The Grundy County Auction Incident)” for John Michael Montgomery, while Williams contributed to numerous chart-toppers for artists like Garth Brooks and Brooks & Dunn.
Pure Country, directed by Christopher Cain and released theatrically on October 23, 1992, marked George Strait’s acting debut as fictional country superstar Dusty Wyatt Chandler. The film grossed over $15 million domestically and remains one of the most successful country music films. The soundtrack’s enduring popularity has kept songs like “Overnight Male” in circulation among Strait’s extensive catalog, which includes over 60 No. 1 hits on various country charts.

Lyric
Let me be your mailman and I’ll always come through
There’s no denying, come rain or shine, I’ll deliver my love to you
I do things by the letter, you can put your stamp on me
‘Cause there ain’t nobody better for a special deliveryLet me be your male-man and I’ll always come through
There’s no denyin’, come rain or shine
I’ll deliver my love to you
I do things by the letter, you can put your stamp on me
‘Cause there ain’t nobody better for a special deliveryI’d rather be hot and cozy, won’t you let me help you through
‘Cause I’m so into goin’ nosy, what your postman wouldn’t do
I don’t need no special instructions of where I need to go
‘Cause everywhere you are baby that’s where I wanna be for sureLet me be your male-man and I’ll always come through
There’s no denyin’, come rain or shine
I’ll deliver my love to you
I do things by the letter, you can put your stamp on me
‘Cause there ain’t nobody better for a special deliveryLet me be your male-man
Let me be your male-man‘Cause I’m a top flight, hold-you-tight, get-you-there-by-daylight
Do-you-right overnight male
I know your heart is fragile, so I’ll handle it with care
There ain’t no doubt, I know love’s route
So baby let me take you there
I’ll bring you cards and roses but I found out one thing’s for sure
What you want most is what I’ve got
Don’t love me for richer or poorerLet me be your male-man
Let me be your male-man
Let me be your male-man
Yes, let me be your male-man
