About The Song

“She’s Got You” is a timeless country ballad written by Hank Cochran and recorded by Patsy Cline. Released as a single on January 10, 1962 (with some sources noting January 30, 1962 promotion), by Decca Records, it served as the follow-up to her massive 1961 hits “I Fall to Pieces” and “Crazy.” The song was recorded on December 17, 1961, at Bradley Film and Recording Studios (Bradley Studios) in Nashville, Tennessee, produced by Owen Bradley. This marked a rare agreement between Cline and Bradley on material, as they often differed on song choices. The track features Cline’s emotive, powerful vocals over a lush Nashville Sound arrangement, including piano, guitar, and orchestral strings, with backing harmonies from The Jordanaires. Clocking in at approximately 3:00, the production emphasized her vocal clarity and emotional depth.

Hank Cochran, a prolific Nashville songwriter later inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2014, wrote “She’s Got You” specifically with Cline in mind. He reportedly called her personally to announce he had penned her next No. 1 hit, then visited her home to play it for her (accompanied by a bottle of alcohol for the occasion). Cline loved it immediately, and Bradley concurred. The lyrics center on a woman reflecting on mementos of a lost love—pictures, records, memories—while realizing her ex-partner has moved on with someone new, delivering a poignant contrast between what she still possesses and what she has truly lost.

The single debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in late January 1962, entering at No. 96, and climbed steadily to peak at No. 14 by late March. On the Billboard Hot C&W Sides (country) chart, it reached No. 1 and held the position for five non-consecutive weeks (aggregate total), spending 19 weeks overall on the chart. It also crossed over to the Easy Listening chart at No. 3 and marked Cline’s first appearance on the UK Singles Chart at No. 43. The song earned Gold certification in later years and became her fourth major hit, solidifying her status during a prolific period. It appeared on her third and final studio album, Sentimentally Yours, released in August 1962, which featured additional tracks from 1961-1962 sessions.

Behind the scenes, session musicians included Harold Bradley on 6-string electric bass, Grady Martin on electric guitar, and others from Nashville’s A-Team. The song’s success followed Cline’s breakthrough year in 1961 and preceded further hits like “When I Get Through with You” and “Leavin’ on Your Mind.” Tragically, Cline died in a plane crash on March 5, 1963, at age 30, but “She’s Got You” endured as one of her signature recordings. It has been covered by numerous artists, including Loretta Lynn (who took it to No. 1 country in 1977), Brenda Lee, and others, and remains a staple in classic country compilations and playlists.

Lyric

I’ve got your picture that you gave to me
And it’s signed with love, just like it used to be
The only thing different, the only thing new
I’ve got your picture, she’s got you

I’ve got the records that we used to share
And they still sound the same as when you were here
The only thing different, the only thing new
I’ve got the records, she’s got you

I’ve got your memory, or has it got me?
I really don’t know but I know it won’t let me be

I’ve got your class ring that proved you cared
And it still looks the same as when you gave it, dear
The only thing different, the only thing new
I’ve got these little things, she’s got you

I’ve got your memory, or has it got me?
I really don’t know but I know it won’t let me be
