About The Song

“If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me” is a song written by David Bellamy and recorded by the American country music duo The Bellamy Brothers. It was released in March 1979 as the second single from their album The Two and Only, issued on Warner Bros. Records / Curb Records. The track runs 3 minutes and 14 seconds in length. Producer Michael Lloyd oversaw the recording sessions, which took place in 1978. The original single release used the title wording “If I Said You Have a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me,” while the album and later editions standardized it to “Had.”

The song marked a pivotal point in the Bellamy Brothers’ career. Following their 1976 pop crossover success with “Let Your Love Flow,” which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, the duo experienced several singles that did not chart highly on the pop side. By the late 1970s they focused more deliberately on the country market. “If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me” became their first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart. It spent three consecutive weeks at the top position, beginning in May 1979. On the Billboard Hot 100 it peaked at number 39. The single also reached number 24 on the Canadian RPM Country Tracks chart.

Internationally the record performed strongly. It first gained traction in Northern Ireland after local label owner Mervyn Solomon of Emerald Records released it there when the American label had shown limited interest in promoting a country-leaning track at that moment. From that regional success it crossed into the United Kingdom, where it peaked at number 3 on the Official UK Singles Chart and spent 14 weeks on the chart. Additional peak positions included number 12 in Australia (Kent Music Report), number 17 in New Zealand, number 11 on the Dutch Top 40, number 8 in Belgium, number 2 in Switzerland, number 19 in Austria, number 34 in Germany, and number 6 in South Africa. In New Zealand the single later received a Gold certification for sales exceeding 15,000 units.

The title and central hook originated from a recurring line used by comedian Groucho Marx on his television program You Bet Your Life. Marx would occasionally deliver the phrase to an attractive female contestant while gesturing with his cigar. David Bellamy had heard the line repeatedly while growing up and recognized its potential as a song title. The same phrasing had also appeared in a 1970 Monty Python’s Flying Circus sketch. Bellamy developed the rest of the lyric around that established double-entendre line. The finished song was nominated for two Grammy Awards in the country categories: Best Country & Western Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal, and Best Country & Western Song.

The album The Two and Only itself reached number 9 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart and number 12 on the corresponding Canadian chart. Three singles were issued from the project. The earlier track “Lovin’ On” had peaked at number 16 on the U.S. country chart. The follow-up single after “If I Said You Had a Beautiful Body Would You Hold It Against Me” was “You Ain’t Just Whistlin’ Dixie,” which reached number 5 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart.

In 2005 the Bellamy Brothers re-recorded the song as a duet with Dolly Parton for their album Angels & Outlaws, Vol. 1. That version charted at number 60 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, marking the duo’s first appearance on the country singles chart since 1994. In a 2003 issue of Country Weekly magazine the original recording was ranked as the number-one country pick-up line of all time.

In 2011 the song attracted renewed attention when Britney Spears released her single “Hold It Against Me,” which contained the lyric “If I said I want your body now, would you hold it against me?” The Bellamy Brothers publicly noted the similarity. David Bellamy stated that the new track contained major similarities and that they felt the originality was lacking. Howard Bellamy responded with a direct quotation of their own title directed at Spears. The writers and publishers associated with the Spears recording later filed a lawsuit alleging that the Bellamy Brothers’ public comments constituted defamation; the matter did not proceed to a full trial resolution in public records.

The original 1979 recording features the brothers’ characteristic close harmonies, acoustic and electric guitars, steel guitar, keyboards, bass, and drums. Session credits from the period list additional musicians including steel guitarist Danny Jones, guitarist Carl Chambers, bassist Jesse Chambers, drummer Rodney Price, and keyboardist Jon LaFrandre. The production maintains a mid-tempo country-pop arrangement that allowed the track to cross from country radio into broader adult-contemporary and international pop playlists.

Chart data compiled from Billboard, Official Charts Company, RPM, Kent Music Report, and other national charts confirm the single’s multi-territory reach in 1979 and early 1980. The song remains one of the Bellamy Brothers’ most frequently anthologized recordings and has appeared on numerous greatest-hits collections issued by Warner Bros., Curb, and later the duo’s own imprint. Its commercial performance established the template for a string of subsequent country number-one singles the brothers scored throughout the 1980s.

Lyric

If I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me?
If I swore you were an angel
Would you treat me like the devil tonight?
If I was dying of thirst
Would your flowing love come quench me?
If I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me?

Now we could talk all night about the weather
Could tell you 'bout my friends out on the coast
I could ask a lot of crazy questions
Or ask you what I really wanna know

If I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me?
If I swore you were an angel
Would you treat me like the devil tonight?
If I was dying of thirst
Would your flowing love come quench me?
If I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me?

Now rain can fall so soft against the window
Sun can shine so bright up in the sky
But daddy always told me, "Don't make small talk"
He said, "Come on out and say what's on your mind"

So if I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me?
If I swore you were an angel
Would you treat me like the devil tonight?
If I was dying of thirst
Would your flowing love come quench me?
If I said you had a beautiful body
Would you hold it against me?
