About The Song
“(I Never Promised You a) Rose Garden” is a song written by Joe South and recorded by American country singer Lynn Anderson. Anderson’s version was released as a single in October 1970 by Columbia Records (catalog number 4-45252), with “Nothing Between Us” as the B-side. The track was recorded in August and September 1970 at Columbia Recording Studio in Nashville, Tennessee, and produced by Glenn Sutton. It runs 2 minutes and 52 seconds.
The song first appeared in 1967 as an album track on Billy Joe Royal’s Billy Joe Royal Featuring Hush, recorded in July 1967. Joe South included his own version on his 1968 debut album Introspect. Dobie Gray released a single version in 1969 that reached number 19 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 and number 89 on the Canadian RPM Top Singles chart. Anderson heard South’s recording and brought the song to her sessions.
Producer Glenn Sutton, who was also Anderson’s husband at the time, initially rejected the idea of recording it. He considered the lyrics unsuitable for a female singer, particularly lines such as “I could promise you things like big diamond rings.” Anderson persisted. With extra studio time available at the end of a session on or around September 10, 1970, Sutton agreed to cut the track as a potential album cut. An initial take with a straight beat was discarded. Guitarist Ray Edenton revised the introduction, and the song was re-recorded in approximately 20 minutes. Strings arranged by Cam Mullins were later overdubbed after Billy Sherrill made string players available.
Columbia Records president Clive Davis heard the mix while in Nashville for a disc jockey convention. Davis immediately identified strong crossover potential and directed that the track be released as a single. The single was issued in October 1970. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and remained there for five weeks between late 1970 and early 1971. On the Billboard Hot 100 it peaked at number three in February 1971. It also reached number five on the Billboard Easy Listening chart and number one on both the Cash Box and Record World pop charts.
Internationally the single topped charts in Australia, Belgium, Canada (both country and pop), Finland, Germany, Ireland, New Zealand, Norway, and Switzerland. It reached number two in the Netherlands and South Africa, number three in the United Kingdom, and number four in Austria. After sales exceeded one million copies it received gold certification from the RIAA.
The parent album, also titled Rose Garden, was released in late 1970. It entered the Billboard Top Country Albums chart on December 26, 1970, and reached number one by the February 13, 1971, issue, remaining at the top for 14 weeks. At the time this was the longest run at number one on the country album chart by a female artist. The album peaked at number 19 on the Billboard 200. It later received platinum certification and remained one of the highest-selling albums by a female country artist for decades.
At the 13th Annual Grammy Awards in 1971, Anderson received the Grammy for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female for the recording. The song became her signature hit and her biggest commercial success. Session personnel for the Nashville tracking included standard Nashville studio musicians of the period under Sutton’s direction, with the later string overdubs by Cam Mullins.
Joe South composed the song in 1967. Prior to Anderson’s version it had circulated primarily as album tracks and a low-charting single. Anderson’s recording, with its countrypolitan arrangement featuring prominent strings and an up-tempo feel, established the definitive commercial version. Chart archives confirm the five-week run at number one on the Hot Country Singles chart, the number-three peak on the Hot 100, the gold certification, and the extensive international number-one placements. Production and release details are documented in Columbia Records session logs, contemporary trade publications, and accounts from Sutton and Anderson regarding the decision to record and release the track.

Lyric
I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden Along with the sunshine There's gotta be a little rain sometime When you take you gotta give So live and let live or let go I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden I could promise you things like big diamond rings But you don't find roses growin' on stalks of clover So you better think it over Well if sweet-talkin' you could make it come true I would give you the world right now on a silver platter But what would it matter So smile for a while and let's be jolly Love shouldn't be so melancholy Come along and share the good times while we can I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden Along with the sunshine There's gotta be a little rain sometime I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden I could sing you a tune and promise you the moon But if that's what it takes to hold you I'd just as soon let you go But there's one thing I want you to know You better look before you leap Still waters run deep And there won't always be someone there to pull you out And you know what I'm talkin' about So smile for a while and let's be jolly Love shouldn't be so melancholy Come along and share the good times while we can I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden Along with the sunshine There's gotta be a little rain sometime I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden
